The updated 2026 BYD Seagull can now be equipped with the company’s advanced DiPilot 300 driver assistance package, complete with a roof-mounted LiDAR sensor, for as little as roughly $13,400. Even the standard version of the tiny EV starts at just over $10,000. That price point completely changes the conversation surrounding advanced driver assistance technology because it proves LiDAR is no longer limited to ultra-luxury vehicles. China’s automotive industry has rapidly evolved into the world’s most aggressive innovation hub, and the Seagull demonstrates how quickly technologies once considered elite are becoming accessible to ordinary buyers. The idea of a budget hatchback carrying technology previously reserved for flagship sedans would have sounded absurd only a few years ago, yet China is making that future real at astonishing speed.

The BYD Seagull may be inexpensive, but it has become one of the most important vehicles in China’s electric revolution. Sold in Europe under the name Dolphin Surf, the compact EV was already impressive because of its low price, practical urban dimensions, and modern styling. Those capabilities are impressive for a budget hatchback, particularly considering the vehicle’s price point, but they do not eliminate the need for human supervision. Even so, the DiPilot 300 system demonstrates how quickly advanced driver assistance technologies are progressing in China. The inclusion of LiDAR allows the Seagull to process its surroundings more accurately than camera-only systems, especially in challenging lighting or weather conditions. BYD positions DiPilot 300 as the middle tier within its broader “God’s Eye” technology family, sitting between more basic driver assistance systems and future higher-level autonomous solutions. Importantly, the company has already hinted that Level 3 capability could arrive on certain vehicles in the future.
